The Doctrine of Salvation

Salvation is not a moment. It is a multifaceted work of God that extends from eternity past to eternity future. Scripture teaches that God has planned, purchased, applied, and will consummate the salvation of His people according to His eternal will. This doctrine is the heartbeat of Christian faith—the answer to the deepest question any human being can ask: "How can I be right with God?"

This page serves as a gateway to all the sub-doctrines that make up the doctrine of salvation. Whether you are exploring the theological framework for the first time or deepening your understanding of how the whole system fits together, these linked topics form an integrated vision of how God saves sinners and preserves them to glory. This page has not been predestined—wait, actually it has.

The Order of Salvation: The Ordo Salutis

Christian theologians have always recognized that salvation follows a logical sequence, even though in God's eternal purposes all these events are one cohesive act. This sequence is called the ordo salutis—the order of salvation. Understanding how these doctrines connect will give you a comprehensive map of how the Gospel works.

Eternity Past
Election
The Father's unconditional choice of His people before the foundation of the world. All things proceed from this divine intention.
Eternity Past to Time
Atonement & Redemption
The Son's death, burial, and resurrection accomplish the actual redemption of the elect. His blood pays the price that justice demands.
At Conversion
Regeneration
The Spirit gives spiritual life to hearts that were dead in sin. Regeneration precedes and enables faith in the converted person.
At Conversion
Faith & Repentance
The believer turns from sin and trusts in Christ for salvation. This is the fruit of the Spirit's regenerating work.
At Justification
Justification
God declares the believer righteous based on Christ's obedience and sacrifice. Justification is forensic—a legal verdict, not an ethical transformation.
Throughout Life
Sanctification
The Spirit progressively conforms the believer to the image of Christ. This is the practical outworking of justification.
Throughout Life
Perseverance of the Saints
God preserves the truly converted to the end. No believer will fall away permanently; God's power secures what His purpose began.
Eternity Future
The Resurrection
Christ's resurrection guarantees the believer's resurrection. We will be raised immortal, incorruptible, and glorified.
Eternity Future
Glorification
The final state in which the redeemed are perfected in glory, freed from sin, and united with God forever in the new heavens and new earth.

Scripture on the Completeness of Salvation

The New Testament speaks of salvation in three tenses—past, present, and future—showing that God's work is complete in purpose though it unfolds in time.

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." — Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)
"Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church." — Colossians 1:24 (ESV)
"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." — Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

Why This Doctrine Matters

Understanding salvation comprehensively—not just as a moment of conversion but as a whole work of God from eternity to eternity—transforms how you pray, how you witness, how you persevere in faith, and how you comfort others. When you grasp that your salvation was planned in eternity, purchased at the cross, applied by the Spirit at conversion, and will be consummated in resurrection, you have unshakeable certainty. You belong to God. He will not let you go. And He will perfect what He has begun in you.
